The flag of the Balearic Islands consists of the Senyera — four horizontal red stripes on a gold field, derived from the Crown of Aragón — with a square purple (púrpura) canton in the upper hoist charged with a five-towered silver castle. The purple canton with castle distinguishes the Balearic flag from other Senyera-derived flags of the former Crown of Aragón. It was officialized by the Statute of Autonomy in 1983.
