Flag of Región de Murcia

The flag of the Region of Murcia is a red (gules) field bearing in the upper hoist seven gold royal crowns arranged in three rows (4-2-1), and in the lower hoist four gold castles arranged in a square. The arrangement reproduces the heraldic elements of the regional coat of arms applied directly to the flag. It was officialized by the Statute of Autonomy in 1982.

Coat of Arms of Región de Murcia

Coat of Arms of Región de Murcia

The coat of arms of the Region of Murcia features four gold castles arranged in a square (saltirewise) on a red (gules) field, with seven gold royal crowns arranged in chief — 'las siete coronas'. The four castles represent the role of the Kingdom of Murcia as a fortified frontier territory during the Reconquista. The seven crowns refer to the successive privileges granted to Murcia by Spanish monarchs in recognition of the city's loyalty during various uprisings and sieges. The shield is ensigned with a closed royal crown. The arms were officialized by Law 4/1982.
