Flag of Extremadura

Flag of Extremadura

The flag of Extremadura consists of three equal horizontal stripes: green at the top, white in the middle, and black at the bottom, with the coat of arms of Extremadura centered on the white stripe. The colors have been variously interpreted as references to the medieval Military Orders of Alcántara (green) and Calatrava (black), which played a major role in the historical Reconquest of the region, with white representing the union of both. The flag was officialized by the Statute of Autonomy in 1985.

Coat of Arms of Extremadura

Coat of Arms of Extremadura

The coat of arms of Extremadura is per fess and ensigned in base. First quarter (Castile): gules with a gold three-towered castle, masoned in sable and ajouré in azure. Second quarter (León): argent with a purple lion rampant, crowned, langued and armed in gules. In base: sinople (green) with two silver Pillars of Hercules rising from silver and azure waves, bound by a red ribbon bearing the motto 'PLUS ULTRA' in gold — referencing Extremadura's role as homeland of the Spanish conquistadors who explored the New World. The shield bears a gold border charged with eight red saltires (St. Andrew's crosses), recalling the House of Burgundy. It is ensigned with a closed royal crown. The arms were officialized by Law 4/1985.
