Flag of Comunidad Foral de Navarra

The flag of Navarre is a red (gules) field bearing the regional coat of arms in the center: the chains of Navarre with the royal crown above. The deep red color recalls the medieval kingdom's banners, while the chains commemorate, according to legend, the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212). The flag was officialized by the Statute of Autonomy (Amejoramiento del Fuero) in 1982.

The coat of arms of Navarre features gules (red) with the chains of Navarre — a gold chain pattern radiating from a central emerald in eight directions, forming a saltire and cross combined. The shield is ensigned with a closed royal crown. According to legend, the chains commemorate the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, where King Sancho VII of Navarre broke through the chains protecting the tent of the Almohad caliph Muhammad al-Nasir, capturing the emerald that crowned it. The historical accuracy of this origin is debated, but the arms were officially adopted in the 13th century and remain among the oldest national arms in Europe still in use.
