The flag of the Canary Islands consists of three equal vertical stripes of white, blue, and yellow. According to tradition, the colors were chosen during the 19th century by Canarian movements and represent the merging of the colors of the flags of Tenerife (white and blue) and Gran Canaria (yellow and blue). The plain version without coat of arms is the civil flag; an institutional version bears the coat of arms in the center. The flag was officialized by the Statute of Autonomy in 1982.
The coat of arms of the Canary Islands features seven silver islands on a blue (azure) field, arranged 3-1-3, representing the seven main islands of the archipelago: La Palma, Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. The shield is ensigned with a royal crown and flanked by two supporters: golden hounds, referencing the etymology of the name 'Canarias' (from Latin canis, dog). At the base, a banner bears the motto OCÉANO. The arms were officialized by Law 7/1991.
