The flag of Andalusia, known as the 'Arbonaida' (green-white-green), consists of three equal horizontal stripes: green at the top, white in the middle, and green at the bottom, with the coat of arms of Andalusia centered on the white stripe. The colors were chosen by Blas Infante, the 'father of the Andalusian fatherland', during the 1918 Assembly of Ronda, and are said to represent the Almohad and Marinid dynasties of the medieval period — symbolic of Andalusia's Muslim heritage. The flag was officialized by the Statute of Autonomy in 1981.
The coat of arms of Andalusia depicts Hercules standing between the two Pillars of Hercules (symbolizing the Strait of Gibraltar at the southern tip of the region), each pillar topped with a banner. Two lions flank Hercules at his feet, traditionally interpreted as the lions of Spain restrained by the strength of the demigod. Above the scene, a banner bears the Latin motto 'Dominator Hercules Fundator' (Hercules the founder and ruler), referencing the mythological foundation of Cadiz by Hercules. The arms were officialized by Law 3/1982.
