The flag of Saxony consists of a horizontal bicolor of white above green. The state service flag (Dienstflagge) is identical but charged in the center with the state coat of arms — the barry of black and gold with the green crown of rue. The white-and-green colors derive from the heraldic colors of the Albertine line of the House of Wettin, which ruled Saxony from the 15th century to 1918. The flag was confirmed by state constitution on 27 May 1992.
The coat of arms of Saxony features 'a shield barry of ten sable and Or, crossed bendwise with a green crown of rue' — ten horizontal stripes alternating black and gold, overlaid with a diagonal green crown of rue (Rautenkranz). The arms originate from the heraldry of the Ascanian dynasty, Margraves of Meissen, and became the symbol of the Wettin dynasty when the Wettins inherited the Electorate of Saxony in 1423. The shield is ensigned with the people's crown. The arms were officialized by state constitution on 27 May 1992 after German reunification.
