The flag of Saxony-Anhalt consists of two equal horizontal stripes: yellow (gold) above black. The state service flag (Dienstflagge) additionally bears the state coat of arms centered across both stripes. The yellow-and-black colors reflect the colors of the Ascanian dynasty, historic rulers of both Saxony and Anhalt. The flag was officialized by state constitution on 16 July 1992.
The coat of arms of Saxony-Anhalt is divided per pale. Dexter half: the arms of Saxony — barry of ten sable and Or with a green crown of rue, derived from the medieval Ascanian dynasty. Sinister half: a black bear walking on a red wall on a gold field — the historical arms of the Principality of Anhalt, the 'Aschersleben bear' (Aschersleber Bär), referring to the Ascanian dynasty's ancestral seat at Aschersleben. The shield is ensigned with the people's crown. The arms were officialized by state constitution on 16 July 1992.
