Flag of Rhineland-Palatinate

Flag of Rhineland-Palatinate

The flag of Rhineland-Palatinate consists of the German national tricolor — three horizontal stripes of black, red, and gold — with a canton in the upper hoist bearing the state coat of arms (the three quarters of Trier, Mainz, and the Palatinate). The use of the federal colors with the regional arms in the canton reflects the state's post-war foundation in 1946 under French occupation. The flag was officialized by state ordinance in 1948.

Coat of Arms of Rhineland-Palatinate

The coat of arms of Rhineland-Palatinate is tripartite, combining the historical arms of the three Electoral territories along the Rhine. First field: a black cross of the Electorate of Trier on a silver field — for the Archbishopric of Trier. Second field: a black wheel of Mainz on a silver field (Mainzer Rad) — for the Archbishopric of Mainz. Third field: a golden lion rampant on a black field — for the Electoral Palatinate of the Rhine (Kurpfalz). The shield is ensigned with the people's crown. The arms were officialized by state ordinance on 10 May 1948.
