Flag of North Rhine-Westphalia

The flag of North Rhine-Westphalia consists of three equal horizontal stripes: green, white, and red. The colors combine the heraldic colors of the three constituent territories: green from Rhineland, white from Westphalia, and red shared between them. The state service flag (Dienstflagge) additionally bears the state coat of arms centered across the stripes. The flag was officialized by state law on 10 March 1953.

Coat of Arms of North Rhine-Westphalia

Coat of Arms of North Rhine-Westphalia

The coat of arms of North Rhine-Westphalia is tripartite. First field (Rhineland): a silver wavy band representing the Rhine river on a green field. Second field (Westphalia): the white Saxon Steed (Sachsenross) galloping on a red field — the historical arms of Westphalia, formerly part of the medieval Duchy of Saxony. Third field (Lippe): a red five-petaled rose with a golden center on a silver field — the rose of Lippe, ancient arms of the Principality of Lippe. The shield is ensigned with the people's crown. The arms were officialized by state law on 10 March 1953.
