The flag of Brandenburg consists of two equal horizontal stripes: red above white. The state service flag additionally bears the red Brandenburg eagle (with golden trefoils on its wings) centered across both stripes. The red-and-white colors recall the heraldic colors of the Brandenburg eagle and the historical Margraviate. The flag was officialized by the state constitution of 1992.
The coat of arms of Brandenburg features the red eagle (Brandenburger Adler) on a silver (white) field, with golden trefoil clovers on its wings. The eagle, depicted with outstretched wings, raised head, and red beak, claws, and tongue, has been the heraldic symbol of the March of Brandenburg since the 12th century, originally adopted by the Margraves of Brandenburg from the Ascanian dynasty. The trefoils on the wings (Kleestängel) are a distinctive Brandenburg detail rarely found in similar eagle arms elsewhere in Germany. The current arms were officialized by the state constitution of Brandenburg in 1992 after German reunification.
