The flag of Baden-Württemberg consists of two equal horizontal stripes: black above gold. The state service flag (Landesdienstflagge) additionally bears the state coat of arms in the center. The black-and-gold colors derive directly from the Hohenstaufen lions, the historical arms of the Swabian dynasty. The flag was officialized alongside the coat of arms by state law on 3 May 1954.
The coat of arms of Baden-Württemberg exists in greater and lesser versions. The lesser arms (Kleines Landeswappen) show three black lions passant guardant on a gold field — the historical arms of the Staufer (Hohenstaufen) dynasty, whose ancestral home lay in Swabia. The greater arms add six small shields above the main shield representing the historical territories that formed the modern state (Franconia, Old Württemberg, Baden, Hohenzollern, Pfalz, Vorderösterreich), with two supporters: a stag (for Württemberg) on the dexter and a griffin (for Baden) on the sinister. The arms were officialized by state law on 3 May 1954.
